2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Watch: Faf du Plessis’ Brain-Fade Causes Comical Run-Out
For a while, it looked like South Africa had learnt from their past mistakes of choking in the big matches. The perennial underachievers of the game or rather the chokers of the game began strongly in their do-or-die final group game against defending champions India. After being invited to bat first, Protea openers-Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock laid the foundations for a good total with a 76-run stand.
But just when it looked like the world number one One-Day International are set for a good total, they pressed the panic button. After Hashim Amla departed for 35, de Kock was bowled for 53 while trying to play a sweep off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja. Soon, they were joined by their skipper AB de Villiers after he was run-out for 16. And then came the moment of madness that is enough to show that the Proteas struggle on the big occasions.
Two runs after playing a part in de Villiers’ run-out, Faf du Plessis once again played his part in another batsman’s run-out and this time it was the in-form David Miller. The incident happened on the first ball of the 30th over when R Ashwin bowled quicker delivery which du Plessis tried to play by making some room for himself. However, he failed to play the cut shot and the ball after hitting the outside edge of the bat went to the short third-man fielder. And as soon as the ball went past his bat, du Plessis set off before hesitating and to make the matters worse he set off once again. In the meantime, Miller after seeing du Plessis’ second attempt, ran hard from the other end only to see his partner changing his mind once again. Both the batsman soon found themselves at the same end. And although Jasprit Bumrah made a poor throw at the batsman’s end, it fortunately went to the bowler’s end where Virat Kohli wasted no time in wrapping up the comical incident.
Here is a clip of that dismissal:
