Team India’s ICC Champions Trophy campaign might have been overshadowed by the alleged rift between captain Virat Kohli and head coach Anil Kumble but the way the whole team celebrated Dinesh Karthik’s birthday on Friday (June 2), it is enough to prove that the spirit in the team is still high.
With smashing cake on the birthday boy’s face becoming a tradition in the Indian dressing room, Karthik was not spared either, as his teammates gathered for the birthday ceremony, and waited for the wicketkeeper-batsman to cut the cake which later turned into a cake fight.
As soon as Karthik approached the table to cut the cake, his teammates including Kohli held the birthday boy from behind to smash his face onto the cake. Afterwards, the players took their chances to smother the cake on Karthik before the Tamil Nadu ace tried to take the revenge by throwing the cake on his teammates.
The celebration ended with Karthik shaking hands with his teammates and coach Anil Kumble.
Posting a video of the celebration on Twitter, the BCCI tweeted: “From cake-smearing to cake-pelting, nobody was spared at @DineshKarthik’s birthday celebration. Take a look.”

Karthik, meanwhile, turned 32 on Friday. The right-handed batsman was initially in the 5-man shortlist for the ICC Champions Trophy but was included in the squad after Manish Pandey sustained an injury. And Karthik has already made a big impression with the bat. After failing to open his account in the first warm-up game against New Zealand, he proved his worth with a blistering 94-run knock in the second practice tie against Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, defending champions India will begin their Champions Trophy against arch-rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston on June 4.
