Chasing 338 in a big final against Pakistan, one down for nothing on the scoreboard, the last thing that India would have wanted to see was Virat Kohli returning to the pavilion early. But it was not Virat Kohli’s day, as India’s man for all occasions had a rare failure in the coloured jersey.

Earlier in the day, Kohli’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss totally backfired, as Pakistan posted a massive total and his miserable day was summed up in the way he got out. The right-handed batsman had walked into this match on the back of three-half centuries in the last four games including a 96 in the semifinal but looked tentative right from the first ball when Mohammad Amir beat his outside edge with a 145 Km/hr delivery. The over began with Kohli taking a couple before playing a defensive shot back towards the bowler. On the third delivery, Kohli edged a regulation catch to the first slip only to see Azhar Ali making a meal of it. However, it did not prove costly for Pakistan, as Kohli edged the very next delivery to the fielder at the backward point to be dismissed for five. And one can take a measure of the value of the wicket with the way Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur and Mohammad Amir celebrated.

Here is a clip of that dismissal:
