2017 ICC Champions Trophy: We Will Make This A Safe And Secure Tournament: ICC

Putting an end to all the speculations in the wake of the Manchester terror attack, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has assured the fans and the teams of a trouble-free ICC Champions Trophy.

In what is being touted as one of the deadliest attacks in Britain in recent times, Manchester was rocked by a bomb blast just nine days prior to the Champions Trophy. The attacks happened late night on Monday (May 22) at the end of a concert by US singer Ariana Grande and resulted in the death of 22 people while injuring over 50, as reported.

As expected, the unfortunate incident has left everyone worried including the fans ahead of the Champions Trophy but the cricket’s governing body, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are confident of making the upcoming event a grand success.

Ronnie Flanagan, the chairman of the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU), assured the fans that while there will be slight inconvenience due to the additional security that has been put in place, they should enjoy the games without any fear.

“I have every confidence that we cannot yield in any way to terrorists’ intentions. I would ask the public to be vigilant and the old adage, if they see something, to say something. But come to our matches,” Flanagan said in London on Thursday (May 25).

“But, come expecting some additional inconvenience, expecting pat-down searches, vehicle searches etc. And searches of any equipment they bring with them. And there will be fast lanes for that not carrying equipment. So that might be an encouragement for people who might have normally brought picnics and all sorts of things. Maybe they want to reconsider that. Perhaps this tournament just might offer a little opportunity to break through the gloom in some small way,” he added.

Urging the fans to give the terrorists a fitting reply by attending the matches, Flanagan said:

“Basically come safe and secure knowledge that we will make this a safe and secure tournament. Don’t let the terrorists have their way. In my experience sport can be a wonderfully positive influence in the face of adversity and in the face of terrorism. We have seen that in South Africa. I saw at first hand in Ireland.”

The eighth edition of the tournament will begin on June 1 with hosts England locking horns against Bangladesh at the Oval and will conclude on June 18.
