The 2017 Indian Premier League Is In Danger: BCCI Secretary

The ongoing tussle between the BCCI and the Lodha Panel is taking a toll on almost every major cricketing event in the country. In the latest setback to the cricketing events, BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke has said that the next year’s IPL is in danger of taking place.

In an interview with the Times of India, Shirke said that the board officials are totally clueless about whether it will be held next year or not.

Shirke said:“The 2017 Indian Premier League is in danger. We have no idea whether it’s happening. How can it happen? We’ve already conveyed the details to the Committee on what needs to be done. There’s a long list that we sent to them on the work that’s pending. There’s no time.

The board has always been reluctant in implementing the reforms suggested by the Lodha Panel and the bittersweet relation between them and the Panel deteriorated after the Supreme Court curbed the board’s financial powers. The apex court has ordered the cricket board to not release funds to state cricket bodies till they vow to implement all the reforms recommended by the Lodha Panel. The court also ordered that the Lodha panel would fix a limit on the monetary value of contracts and the cricket board will have to take permission from the Panel if they want any contract above the limit set by the Panel.

Speaking on that, Shirke said:“Following the recent SC order, the fact that no disbursement of funds will take place has already been conveyed to the member associations and they are fully aware of this. However, I personally do not think that will have any effect on their voting decisions.”

Earlier, the BCCI had written to the England and Wales Cricket Board to bear its expenses in the upcoming series. Not only that, there are reports that the series is in danger as BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke have yet not filed the compliance report and appear in person before the panel as instructed by the apex court.
