Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting highly regards national wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey not on for his skills behind the wickets but is also in awe of his leadership skills.
The 27-year-old Carey has delivered behind the stumps during his India and Pakistan tour. Adding to it, Carey has brought up his first-ever half-century during the penultimate game against the Men in Green at Dubai International Stadium.
Ricky Ponting hails Alex Carey’s leadership skills –
Recently, Australia has whitewashed Pakistan in the five-match ODI series. With this, they’ve continued with their eighth match-winning streak.
“I actually think he’s got really good strong leadership qualities as well. He offers the best package as keeper,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.
The legendary cricketer Ponting has also witnessed the rise of Carey in the domestic fold. Thus, he pushed Carey as a second-choice skipper for the Kangaroos if their regular skipper Aaron Finch will face any trouble during the foreseeable future.
In past, Carey has not only impressed his team members. But it further saw coaches reposing faith in the promising gloveman.
“If anything happened to Finch through the World Cup or leading into the World Cup, then I think he’s really well-equipped to lead the side, even though he’s still relatively inexperienced and never captained Australia before,” Ponting added.
The sharp work with gloves has pushed his case for the twelfth edition of the 2019 World Cup, too.
Interestingly, he’s is concurrently working as a deputy of Finch which further gave an indication about his leadership qualities.
Ponting believes Carey becomes threatening with his ability to score runs all across the fence. He added Carey is the lad who lends stability in the batting line-up.
“He’s dangerous at the top of the order or late in the innings because he does score 360 degrees, he’s a deceptively hard hitter of the ball and for mine, he’s just the right character, he’s the right person that you want to have in your team,” Ponting stated.
Alex Carey aims for the 2019 World Cup berth:
Carey, who had his ambitions to lead his team, has featured in the football tournament at his tender age. He recently expressed his wish to make it to the World Cup. He added they’ve amazing leaders in the set-up.
“I’d like to be at the World Cup first. We’ve got lots of leaders around this group,” Carey maintained.
Ponting has also noted it would be now tricky for Australia to make. Earlier, Cricket Australia’s chief of selectors had revealed Matthew Wade, Peter Handscomb and Test specialist Tim Paine.
“I think it’s too late now to be making those changes on your keeper,” Ponting continued.
Overall, Carey has featured in 19 ODIs and as many T20Is. In 17 innings, Carey has accumulated 429 runs at an average of 30.64.
Meanwhile, Ponting is all set to serve as an Australia’s assistant coach with Justin Langer being at the helm.
Australia will kick-off their campaign on June 1st against Afghanistan at Bristol County Ground.
