Team India is in good stead ahead of the 2019 World Cup despite a disappointing show in their first warm-up match against New Zealand in London on May 25. Virat Kohli and his men are optimistic about partaking in the marquee event which will begin on May 30 at the Kennington Oval. However, cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has somewhat questioned the capability of ace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

It’s the fact that Bhuvneshwar’s performance has witnessed a drastic dip in form since he has returned from the back injury. But given to the swinging conditions as per the norm in England, the Meerut-based bowler could be threatening for the opposition on his day.

“In 50-overs cricket, we don’t quite see the best of Bhuvneshwar Kumar,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Manjrekar, as saying.

The prominent bowler Bhuvneshwar has been an asset for Team India over the years. However, the pace spearhead has further deceived batsmen from time to time.

Since making his debut in 2012, Bhuvneshwar has featured in 105 ODIs which saw him bagging 118 scalps at an average of 35.7. He also has three four-fors and one five-wicket haul under his belt in the One-day cricket.

Bhuvneshwar has managed to play an only match in the World Cup. He has bagged a wicket while conceding 19 runs off 30 deliveries.

While going by Bhuvneshwar’s performance in ODIs in England, he has bagged 18 wickets in 11 matches. He has bowled at an average of 28.72, whereas, his economy read as 4.48.

Manjrekar sees Pandya in playing XI than Bhuvneshwar:

The 53-year-old Manjrekar, who himself has featured in 74 ODIs for India; don’t see Bhuvneshwar in India’s playing XI at the ICC World Cup 2019. He conceded allrounder Hardik Pandya will be preferred owing to his batting skills. He followed it by hinting most of the teams has witnessed Bhuvneshwar while bowling on most of the occasions.

“India is likely to drop Bhuvneshwar and get Hardik Pandya in because of the batting ability. He is a kind of bowler the world has seen a lot of,” Manjrekar added.

Manjrekar further stated Bhuvneshwar isn’t naturally a gifted bowler; however, added he has a great mindset.

So much so, Manjrekar reiterated has lacked at times due to the lack of sheer pace.

“He has a great attitude. And is someone who isn’t gifted. He has worked against all odds to make a contribution. He tends to strain at times in the death during 50-overs cricket due to his lack of pace and strength,” Manjrekar said.

Meanwhile, India will begin their World Cup campaign on June 5 against South Africa in Southampton.

After losing their warm-up game against Kiwis by six wickets, India will face Bangladesh in the second warm-up fixture at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
