The International Cricket Council (ICC) have announced that there are no plans to change the venue for 2024 T20 World Cup. The governing body of the game as well as England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have stated that United States and West Indies are set to host the next edition of the T20 World Cup.
Recent media reports suggested that the venue for the T20 World Cup could be shifted out of US and West Indies due to administrative uncertainty in the USA Cricket. According to a report from a leading media outlet, the ICC was reportedly set to change the venues for the events scheduled to be held in 2024 and 2025. The report stated that the West Indies and United States were to be compensated with another event of similar stature at a later stage for letting go of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in Pakistan was reportedly set to be the event that was to go to the West Indies and the United States as compensation for letting go of the T20 World Cup. Pakistan, on the other hand, were to get monetary compensation for the same.
2024 T20 World Cup to be held in US and West Indies:
ICC have quashed the rumors and have confirmed that the next T20 World Cup is set to be played in the West Indies and the United States. The ICC and the ECB confirmed the development separately on Friday (June 9). Their statement came in response to suggestions that the tournament would be allocated to England, Ireland, and Scotland.
“There is absolutely no truth to reports that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be moved from the West Indies and the USA,” said an ECB spokesperson. “Since the event is organized by the ICC, their statement must be taken as binding and conclusive.”
On the other hand, the ICC spokesperson said: “Venue inspections have recently been concluded in both host territories, and planning for the event in June 2024 is in full swing.”
Cricbuzz further quoted an ICC member as saying: “The 2024 event is scheduled for June, and the only other possible location is England. If someone were to ask the ECB if they can host in 2024, the answer would be crystal clear – they can’t. So, the possibility doesn’t even arise. Just a glance at the England venue fixtures for next year will confirm this to anyone observant enough.”
Meanwhile, the 2024 T20 World Cup is set to be the largest event in terms of teams participating in the event. A total of 20 teams will be participating in the upcoming edition.
