4 best New Zealand performances against India in T20Is

Some call them underdogs in an ICC event, while some call them favourites to win the trophy. That’s the beauty of this New Zealand squad who can always take the game away from their opponents, especially in the shortest format of the game. The Kiwis have the mixture of powerful hitters and leading all-rounders with them who are capable of turning around the encounters in their favour. The upcoming T20Is series against India could prove to be a great chance for them to continue their dominance over the Virat Kohli-led Indian side.

New Zealand have so far played 6 T20 Internationals against India and won 5 of them. One match was abandoned due to rain in 2012. The 100% win record against India show their class act in this format.

Let us revive some of the finest performances by New Zealand players against India in T20I:

Mitchell Santner

Scoring 126 in a T20I against a team like India is never enough as long as it is New Zealand on the other side. The 2016 World T20 was a remarkable event for the Kiwis and will be remembered for their demolition of India. After restricting New Zealand to a low total of 126, Dhoni & co. were hoping to achieve the target with more than 4-5 overs to spare, but the story turned out to be a lot different. The Dhoni-led power-packed side got all-out for just 79 runs.

The left-arm orthodox spinner Mitchell Santner took minutes to become the hero of the innings. He first removed Rohit Sharma and then went on to take the crucial wickets of Indian T20 specialists like Dhoni, Raina, and Pandya. His figures of 4 for 11 in 4 overs earned him the Man of the Match trophy. The Hamilton-born player got good support from Ish Sodhi and Nathan McCullum.

Brendon McCullum

When it comes to T20 cricket, former New Zealand player Brendon McCullum would be on everyone’s list. His fearless batting against the new ball can’t be compared with any other cricketer. His greatest T20I innings’ also include the one that he played in Chennai in 2012 against India. After losing the toss, the Blackcaps were 2 for two within 1.3 overs before Brendon McCullum started some fireworks at the historic Chepauk Stadium. The right-hander played a blistering knock of 91 runs, which include 11 fours and three sixes.

His excellent effort put New Zealand on top as they ended up with 167 for 5 in 20 overs. On the other side, Indians too were going strong but eventually lost the game by just one run. In the end, it was Baz who became the showstopper of the match.

Brendon McCullum

Few cricketers never changed their batting style throughout their career, and Brendon McCullum was one of them. In his 14-year long career, the right-hander didn’t change his game and played aggressively in whatever format he is playing. One of his eminent innings’ came against India in 2009 Wellington T20I where he outclassed the opposition with his fearless knock of 69 runs.

After receiving a target of mere 150 runs, New Zealand were sure of their victory, keeping in mind the small grounds and the bunch of big hitters in the squad. Unexpectedly, the game became a cracker as India bowled remarkably well in the middle overs. It went on to become a last over battle with New Zealand requiring 12 off it. McCullum brothers were unable to create big shots on the first three deliveries, but the Baz finished off in style with 2 consecutive boundaries and became the Man of the Match.

Daniel Vettori

Daniel Vettori is one of the legends of the world cricket and arguably the best spinner New Zealand has ever produced. The left-arm orthodox spinner captained his side in the inaugural edition of the World T20 and took his team to the semi-finals of the tournament. The match against India was one of the encounters which Vettori would always remember in his career.

He took four important wickets by just giving 20 runs. His incredible spell put India on the backfoot and Dhoni & Co. lost the crucial match by ten runs in the end. His useful spell on the flat pitch of Wanderers earned him the Man of the Match trophy.

Now, after the completion of the ODI series on 29th October, both the sides would be looking to dominate each other in the 3-match T20I series that is going to start on 1st November. The first game will take place in Delhi while the next two will be played at Rajkot & Thiruvananthapuram on 4th November & 7th November respectively.
