It is quite tough to believe that a player with two triple Test centuries ended his Test career with an average of less than 50, but perhaps that was the beauty of one of Test cricket’s finest-ever openers.

On an off day, he looked like a club cricketer at his best, poking out to outgoing deliveries or playing in the air, however, on his day, he made even the best bowling line-ups look like amateurs.

So it is not surprising then that despite scoring a staggering 23 centuries out of which 14 were above 150, he finished his career with an average below 50. The swashbuckling opener represented India in 104 Test, scoring 8586 runs at an average of 49.34 and a brilliant strike rate of 82.23.
