Virat was that time at his peak, and it was just taken for granted that whenever Kohli is in pursuit of any kind of total, the target would be obviously breached at the end of the day.

On a sluggish Rajkot pitch and in the scorching heat, Kohli along with MS Dhoni, arguably two of the greatest ODI finishers in the cricketing history actually had the chase under control all along. But fate betrayed the two, suddenly they lost the momentum and South Africa strangled them.

Chasing a target of 271, India were well on course at 206/3 in the 44th over, and then out of nowhere Morne Morkel came back with a blistering spell and took the wicket of Virat Kohli followed by Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket, and the well on course chase was derailed just like that.

It was an instance when everything was going as planned for Kohli and his dismissal followed a mini-collapse and lastly India could never get to the target.
