India began their home series against New Zealand in 1969 on a stunning note. In a low-scoring thriller, the hosts went on to defend 188 runs to win the clash by 60 runs.

Batting first, India were all out for just 156 in their innings. In reply, New Zealand scored 229 with Bevan Congdon’s 78-run knock leading the charge with the bat. India improved their batting display in the second innings and scored 260 runs to set New Zealand a target of 188 runs.

Skipper Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi led from the front with the bat, scoring a crucial 67 in the second innings. India’s spin duo of Bishan Singh Bedi and E Prasanna then ran riot, taking 6 and 4 wickets respectively to bowl out the tourists for just 127.
