5 Players Who Deserved To Be Part Of World Cup Squad, But Missed Out On Selection
MSK Prasad-led selection committee named the 15-member squad for World Cup 2019 a few minutes back.
There weren’t any surprises in the squad and everything panned out as per the plan.
Yes, few players missed out on selection but selectors were expected to take tough calls.
Let us have a look at five players who deserved a place in the Indian team but missed out on selection –
Rishabh Pant – One of the top players to have missed out on selection is Rishabh Pant. The youngster was in the scheme of things right after he made his ODI debut against West Indies.
He also got his chances and at one stage, he seemed to be ahead of Dinesh Karthik when the latter was dropped but Karthik’s experience proved to be vital.
The right-handed batsman went ahead of Rishabh Pant and booked his place in the squad for the tournament.
Ambati Rayudu – When Rayudu made his comeback to the ODI team after failing the yo-yo test, he was touted to be the perfect man for number 4 spot by Indian skipper Virat Kohli.
However, his form slumped at the wrong time and he lost his place in the squad for World Cup.
Rayudu’s experience did not work in his favour and in the end, it was the form that mattered as Rayudu missed out on selection.
Ajinkya Rahane – The right-handed opener was once a regular fixture in the ODI squad but the policy of the captain to play different batsmen at number 4 cost him that saw Rahane losing his place.
He also batted as an opener and at number four and finally, lost his place in the team. On South Africa tour in 2018, he was touted to be number 4 batsman by Kohli but he is yet to play an ODI after that.
Rahane still have age by his side and can make his comeback to the ODI side soon.
Ishant Sharma – His name on the list might surprise you but Ishant’s experience is something that matters the most.
Considering that Bhuvneshwar Kumar has not been in best of his form in IPL, team India needed an experienced pacer and Ishant was the best man for the job.
He hasn’t played an ODI for three years now but his Test performances have been great and he also played first-class and one-day cricket in England last year during his county stint.
Team India now only has three regular pacers and might find itself in difficulty if any of the pacers do not have a good day.
Umesh Yadav – The regular changing and chopping policy eventually cost Umesh Yadav his place in the team and he was dropped from the ODI squad.
One might say that his form wasn’t good but he wasn’t given a consistent run.
Even after performing at home, Umesh found himself out of playing XI in Test series that had an impact on his form overall form and Umesh found himself out of contention for World Cup.
He had made his comeback to the limited-overs team on the basis of IPL performances last year. He is yet to play an ODI since West Indies series that was held in October 2018.
