5 players who impressed everyone but missed out on the qualifiers in the IPL

The group-stage of the Indian Premier League is over and the knock-outs are already upon us as the 9th edition of the competition draws to a close.

The Gujarat Lions, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Kolkata Knight Riders made it to the playoffs and are fighting for the title while 4 other teams knocked out of the group stage.

The Delhi Daredevils, the Mumbai Indians, the Rising Pune Supergiants and the Kings XI Punjab have all crashed out of the competition but have provided us with their share of entertainment throughout the group stage.

There are a number of players from all 4 teams that have been exceptional in the tournament but missed out on a place in the qualifiers due to their team’s debacles.

Here are 5 individual performers who excelled in the group stage but were knocked-out:

Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians):

The skipper of the winning team from the previous edition of the competition, Rohit Sharma carried his form from the international scene with him to the IPL.

He started off a bit shakily but steadily took control of his team’s batting order scoring consistently throughout the group stage. He has 489 runs to his name with a best of 85* and has 5 half centuries in the competition.

However, an inconsistent run in the later half of the competition ended his sides run abruptly leaving Sharma with no more T20 cricket this month.

Ajinkya Rahane (Rising Pune Supergiants):

Another Indian international, Rahane has been the pillar stone of MS Dhoni’s unfortunate Pune franchise.

In the midst of all the injuries that plagued the team over the course of the competition, Rahane stood tall and came out with respectable numbers.

He scored 480 runs at an average of 48.63 with 6 half-centuries in just 14 games. His heroics, however, were not enough for the Supergiants who finished the competition in the 7th place thanks to a win over the Kings XI Punjab in the last game.

Murali Vijay (Kings XI Punjab):

One of the most consistent performers in the Indian Premier League over the years, Murali Vijay had a decent season as the skipper of the Kings XI Punjab side.

David Miller, who was out of sorts starting the season as the captain of the side did not help the cause as the Punjab franchise crashed out of the competition long before the end of the group stage.

However, Vijay, as an opener gave the team consistently starts scoring 453 runs at a strike rate of 124.45. He is unlucky to not play a further part in the tournament.
