5 reasons for India’s win over New Zealand in 2nd test match

India produced an excellent performance in the second Test match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. They defeated New Zealand by 178 runs to win the series 2-0 and reclaim. There were some moments in the match that Indian team was tested but excellent performances by batsmen bailed them out and won the match.

Here we look at the five reasons for India’s win over New Zealand in 2nd test match.

  1. Wriddhman Saha’s contribution in both innings

Wriddhman Saha played a key role in India’s win during the second Test match. In the first test match when the Indian were struggling at 200 for 6, Saha came to the rescue and scored an unbeaten 54 in the first innings to help India post a competitive total of 316 runs. In the second innings too India were struggling at 106 for 6, Saha played solidly and remained not out on 58 to give India a substantial lead. For his brilliant performance in both innings, the wicketkeeper batsman was named the man of match award at his home ground.

  1. Partnership between Pujara and Rahane in the first innings

India won the toss and choose to bat on the first day. Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay and Kohli were dismissed early, to leave the home team at 46 for 3. Rahane and Pujara played with solid technique. Their partnership helped them get out of trouble and make sure that India reach a good total. Both the players completed their half centuries. Rahane and Pujara put on 141 for the fourth wicket which steadied the innings. Pujara was the fourth wicket to fall at the score of 187. His contribution to the team was 87.

  1. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s superb bowling spell

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was exceptional in the first innings. He bowled with great control and did not allow the New Zealand batsmen to score runs easily. Kumar picked 2 wickets with new ball and after the rain break on the 2nd day, he made sure of a New Zealand collapse that resulted in an 112-run lead in the first innings. The three of his better wicket were Taylor, Santner, and Henry. He picked a total of 5 wickets, giving away just 48 in 15 overs which ensured that India gets a big lead in the first innings.

  1. Contribution from Kohli, Rohit and Saha

India was struggling at 24 for 2. Kohli came to the crease and played with positive approach. He timed the ball and put pressure back on New Zealand bowlers. India was then reduced to 43 for 4. Kohli and Rohit Sharma put 48 for the 5th wicket. Kohli was dismissed for 45. After that, Rohit Sharma and Saha put on 103 runs for the 7th wicket which helped India to get out of trouble. Rohit Sharma played one of his best knocks ever in Test matches. Rohit Sharma scored 82 runs.

  1. Great bowling effort by Indian bowlers in 2nd innings

Indian bowlers did a brilliant job in the 2nd innings. Ashwin, Jadeja and Mohammad Shami picked 3 wickets each while Kumar picked 1 wicket. New Zealand were 104 for 2 at one stage and after Nicholls’ wicket, New Zealand batsmen failed to put any resistance against spin or pace. Mohammad Shami bowled with great discipline. The two Indian spinners did not give away many runs but also made sure they pick wickets at important times. It was a great bowling display by the Indian bowlers which ensured that New Zealand were all-out for 197.
