Ever since taking the captaincy, the Delhi batsman has shown a remarkable sense of responsibility with the willow. While his batting skills were never in doubt in the limited-overs format, few doubted his temperament to excel in the longest format.

There was a small slump in form after the double century against West Indies but he roared back to form with another double century in the last Test against New Zealand. In 17 Tests as the captain, he has scored 1456 runs at an average of 53.92, far better than his career average of 45.56.
