5 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma Should Open The Innings For Mumbai Indians!

Indian opener and Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma is arguably one of the finest batsmen of this era. His ability to play big shots early in the innings makes him the perfect choice for the opening slot. However, in the current edition of the IPL, the Mumbaikar has surprised everyone by sending Jos Buttler to open the innings with Parthiv Patel. So far, the decision did not go in favour of the Mumbai Indians. Now, the Mumbai fans would want the skipper to come out first and fire from one end.

Here are top reasons why the Mumbai Indians’ captain should bat at the top of the order:

1) Solid Against The Fast Bowlers

We all have seen in the past how good Rohit Sharma is against the fast bowlers. He is well aware of how to use the pace of the bowler. The Mumbai skipper likes to open his arms against the new ball without any trouble in facing the swinging deliveries. In the current season of the IPL, Rohit is facing issues while batting in the middle order. He has been dismissed by the spinners three times so far. Apparently, he is struggling against the spinners when coming at number 3 or 4. If he would open the innings, he might face fewer spinners, which helps him to bring back his form.

2) Gets More Time To Settle

A player like Rohit Sharma single-handedly can take his team to a victory if settles down. If Rohit Sharma opens the innings, he will get more balls to play, which would be a huge advantage for his team. He is a kind of batsman who loves to play till the end, which further gives Mumbai Indians a chance to put a huge total on the board. Over the years, his best innings have taken place when he has opened for his team. If Mumbai Indians want to continue their winning momentum, he should lead from the front by coming up the order.

3) Best Batsman Of The Team

After Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement, Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly the best batsman of the Mumbai Indians team. In a shorter format like T20, every team would want their best batsman to play more balls so that he can take advantage of them. Rohit, at number 3 or 4 so far, has not been able to start his innings the way everyone wants him to. He has to open the innings to give Mumbai some quick starts, which further help the team to put a massive total on the board. His experience at the top order would help his team in settling down the things.

4) Outstanding Record As An Opener

Way back in 2007, the Mumbaikar had made his debut because of his tremendous performance in the domestic circuit. His perfect timing along with a superb balance was enough to provide him with the World T20 ticket to South Africa that year. After India’s surprising victory in the 2007 World T20, Rohit started lacking in his consistency that kept him in and out of the squad.

The biggest turnaround for him took place in the Champions Trophy 2013 where he alongside Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings and gave India some terrific starts. Since that day, the batting star did not look back and is performing well in all three formats of the game. From 2013 till now, he has an impressive record with 3153 runs in 67 matches at an average of 54 in ODIs and scored 8 centuries that included 2 double-centuries as well. Just like the Indian team, he needs to open the innings for Mumbai Indians too.

5) Jos Buttler Would Be Better Down The Order

Jos Buttler is a hard hitter and could connect the old ball well rather than the new swinging delivery. The English man has the scores of 38, 28, 14, 2 and 26 to his name so far. He has failed to convert his good starts into big ones that could create problems for him to play in the remaining games. However, if the skipper wants him to be in the side, then he can bat lower down the order at number 5 or 6. This will give the team, an extra option of a hard hitter, along with Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya, while chasing a big total.
