IPL 2017: Five most successful IPL captains

Less than a week left for one of the most loved cricket tournaments of the world! This season’s IPL will surely bring enormous excitement especially because of the several changes in the captaincy role. It would be interesting to see what Rising Pune Supergiants skipper Steve Smith will do in front of the former captain MS Dhoni. Also, the hard hitter Glenn Maxwell, who is captaining Kings XI Punjab in this season, would want to turn the cards in his favour.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli must be praying this time to win the trophy as he and his teammates gave their best last time but were not successful in creating history.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is one of the successful leaders in the history of IPL. He would certainly want his side to continue their form from the past. Captaincy has a significant role to play in the shorter formats of the game.

So, just before the commencement of the IPL 10, let us showcase you the list of most successful captains in the history of IPL:

5. Shane Warne (M – 55, W – 30, L – 24, T – 1, W% – 55.45)

Shane Warne is arguably one of the finest spinners one has ever seen. His ability to spin the ball on any track had made him the best spinner of all time. In the inaugural edition of the IPL, Warne was given a young team who would not have thought that they could ever win the IPL. However, his experience came into play, and he & his unsung team managed to grab the trophy.

Warne’s winning percentage of 55.45 is quite impressive as he stood at number 5 in the list. He has also captained his national side in ODIs and won 10 out of 11 matches. Unfortunately, he did not captain his team in the Test format, but one cannot ignore his leadership skills.

4. Gautam Gambhir (M – 107, W – 61, L – 45, T – 1, W% – 57.47)

Gambhir

One of India’s most intelligent spin players, Gautam Gambhir, started his IPL stint with Delhi Daredevils. In 2009, the left-hander was given the captaincy as a replacement of Virender Sehwag where he led his team to the semi-finals in South Africa. But his captaincy came to fore when KKR picked him to their side. The Delhiite showed his experience and led the team to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.

Along with the win percentage of 57.47 as a captain, he also impressed everyone with his batting as the 35-year old scored 590 runs in the 2012 edition at a strike rate of 143.55. He is undoubtedly one of India’s top batsmen who is currently struggling to find a place in the national squad.

3. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (M – 143, W – 83, L – 59, W% – 58.45)

Most of us would have expected this legend to be at the top spot in terms of captaincy but he has missed out on this occasion. India’s best leader so far got the number 3 spot in the IPL successful captains list as he has the winning percentage of 58.45. His incredible record in the IPL has given him two consecutive titles in 2010 and 2011.

It would not be wrong if we say that this man is the reason behind Jadeja and Ashwin’s success. He has also nurtured the likes of Murali Vijay, Mohit Sharma, and many other big players. Dhoni’s 2016 edition as a skipper with Rising Pune Supergiants didn’t go well but this would not matter much in front of his ample amount of contribution as a captain.

2. Rohit Sharma (M – 58, W – 34, L – 24, W% – 58.62)

Rohit Sharma’s contribution for Deccan Chargers in the past had earned him the spot in one of the most favourite teams of IPL, Mumbai Indians. He was given the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians when Ricky Ponting gave up the role in 2013. The Mumbaikar happily accepted the offer and led his team to the first IPL title in the same season, which happened to be Sachin Tendulkar’s last IPL.

He didn’t stop here as he went on to grab another title in 2015. Rohit’s batting performance was too impressive as he scored a 26-ball 50 against Chennai Super Kings in the Final. His champion innings also earned him the player of the match award in that game. Currently, he is the third highest run-scorer in the IPL history.

1. Sachin Tendulkar (M – 51, W – 30, L – 21, W% – 58.82)

sachin tendulkar

You must be surprised after seeing this! But it’s a truth that the Indian legend and arguably the best batsman of the world is at the top in terms of most successful captains so far in the IPL. Sachin Tendulkar has the winning percentage of 58.82 which is better than any other captain as of now. He might have missed a title in 2010 but his record was exceptional. He led his team to the final of the tournament where they failed to beat Chennai. Tendulkar was the highest run-scorer in that edition with 618 runs at an average of 47.53 which earned him the player of the series award. He was also named as the best captain in the 2010 IPL awards.

Sachin Tendulkar memorable stint as a captain continued in 2011 too as he took his team to the playoffs. Later on, he gave up the captaincy and started playing as a batsman and mentor of the team.
