5 things that can happen in IPL if MS Dhoni joins new franchise
MS Dhoni has decided to ply his trade in IPL for a new franchise after BCCI suspended his employer Chennai Super Kings for two years from the richest cricket league in the world. For the last eight years MS Dhoni and India Cements owned CSK had been virtually two sides of a coin. A player of Dhoni’s caliber any franchise would like to keep in their rank owing to his brand value and ability to turn the difficult match in his favour. So, if the captain of the Indian limited over team dons new jersey five things may happen in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League.
Here are those five things:
1)Dhoni’s fan base may shift to the new franchise
Captain MS Dhoni has won two IPL trophies with the Chennai-based IPL franchise. He has also won three ICC trophies. Among the contemporary cricketers MS Dhoni has the second highest twitter followers after Virat Kohli. Dhoni has 4.63 million Twitter followers while Virat Kohli has 8.38 million Twitter followers. So, these fans may shift to another franchise for which Dhoni will be playing. Besides twitter followers, there are many die-hard Dhoni fans who don’t have a social media presence, but will not shy away to fill the stadium and cheer up for their hero.
2) Dhoni’s brand value:
Among the current international cricketers, MS Dhoni has the highest brand value in the international market. Recently he featured in top 10 internationally marketable sports person in the world. His current brand value is $17 million. Dhoni ranked 22nd on the list of total earnings among the all sports person in the world. His endorsement worth $26 million. So, his new franchise will enjoy his service because consumer goods companies will approach to the franchise for advertisement. This will help the franchise to earn hefty revenue.
3) For CSK it will be hefty blow:
MS Dhoni, 34, earlier said that he would not play in the Indian Premier League if Chennai Super Kings suspended from the league. But, as the BCCI strictly followed the recommendations of the Supreme Court and suspended the Chennai-based IPL franchise for two years a close confidant of MS Dhoni said the Indian limited over captain will ply his trade in the league. If the news is to be believed then it will be a hefty blow for CSK because of the plethora of controversies CSK’s brand image tainted. So, if any, new franchise buys Dhoni in the auction then CSK will face difficulty to buy him back after two years. When CSK will back in action Dhoni will be 36, Dhoni might lose his touch. At the same if Dhoni plays well then other franchise would like to play their card in the auction, so that may result in the high price of MS Dhoni. So, the question could be have been would CSK go for 36-year-old Dhoni to get a new start in IPL only for brand value.
4) Create new excitement:
Dhoni for the last eight played for Chennai Super Kings. So his appearance in new colour will create excitement among the fans. The IPL 9 will be held after the World T20 final. So, the multilateral tournament will create a platform for the league. If India managed to finish on a high then league with two new franchises will add some different flavour to the fans. The current players of Rajasthan Royals, another suspended team, and others players of CSK will also put on auction, so there will be a chance these players will play for different teams. This will be another reason for IPL fans to immerse in new excitement.
5) Gross revenue of IPL may increase:
Due to controversies IPL’s sponsorship dipped around Rs. 390 crore to Rs. 350 crore in the last two years, American Appraisal claimed. The Indian sports industry has grown by 10% in the last two years from around 4, 400 crores in 2013 to Rs,4, 800 crores in 2015. At the same time, BCCI’s on ground sponsorship plunged from Rs 500 crore to Rs, 460 crores. So, it is clear that fans are getting bored with IPL and sponsors are no more finding it the only medium to woo the Indin consumers. Controversies sometimes made a positive impact on the league. So, if MS Dhoni joins a new team then fans may fill the stadium to see Dhoni in attire with a new group of players. The viewership will also be increased.
