5 Things other Captains can learn from MS Dhoni

It is often said that a good leader must always lead from the front and by example. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian skipper, perfectly fits within the above bill. The charismatic leader from Jharkhand has clearly established a benchmark, when it comes to leading a side with tremendous success. But that has been due to the courtesy of some unique qualities, which MSD has in his arsenal.

Mentioned below, are the rare traits which make MSD unique, and also Things that other captains can learn from MS Dhoni –

How often have we attached the phrase “Captain Cool” with MS Dhoni? Very often indeed! Dhoni’s calm and composed attitude, is what other captains can surely espouse. The mind-set of the captain is what sets the tone for the team. The ocean of calmness engulfing MSD is one major reason behind India’s meteoric rise in the ODI format. It’s this calm attitude, which sets an example for the rest of the side.

When a leader panics, the teammates too feel that added burden, and thus cannot implement their skills to perfection. With Dhoni around, the Indians do not have to worry about feeling the added pressure.

Dhoni is not that leader, who will dump a player on the basis of a few failures. As a matter of fact, MS Dhoni shows tremendous trust in the abilities of his players, and thus gives them a long rope. The long rope given, then motivates the individual to perform and repay the faith of the captain.

This has been the exact case with many including India’s current openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. Sharma was severely criticized for his poor performances in the middle order. Along with him, Dhoni too was not spared, as a really long rope was given to Sharma. But Dhoni chose to stick with Sharma, and rather used him as an opener. And since being promoted as an opener, Sharma averages a healthy 52.70.

Before the World Cup, Shikhar Dhawan seemed like a lost cause too but Dhoni stuck with him and the results are there to be seen by one and all. Having faith does wonders, doesn’t it?

Great leaders always implement strategies, which maximize the team performance. Dhoni has been no exception here. Dhoni prefers to play with a strategy which ensures that India continue their run of dominance. Spin bowling has been a massive strength of the Indians. Dhoni, just uses that benefit to the core.

In the middle overs, the spin twins of Ashwin-Jadeja are hard to counter. A lot of teams capitalize good opening starts in the middle overs. But when India is around, that is not always the case. The spinners strangle the opposition batsmen and make life incredibly tough. Against the middle order batsmen, Jadeja averages a mere 20.76 per wicket. The stat says it all!

Dhoni has been known to show great faith in young talent. Doing so, has paid rich dividends for him. Young individuals bring in a lot of positivity and vibrancy. This is evident in the current Indian setup. The 2007 T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy in 2013 were both won by a team of inexperienced youngsters, but the team was full of passion and dedication.

The ongoing World Cup has a similar tale to depict. Experienced players such as Sehwag, Yuvraj, Harbhajan and Gambhir were dropped. But as of this moment, it’s fair to say that their younger replacements have not disappointed. They have rather been simply outstanding.

Not just on the field, but Dhoni leads the team by example even off the field. Handling the grilling questions of the media is a headache for several skippers. But that is surely not the case with Dhoni. Dhoni answers the media in his usual calm manner and always has his emotions under control. As a consequence, there is no added lumber on the Indian team.

The captain’s composed attitude does the job for the side off the field as well. On the other hand, there have been teams, who have crumbled to media pressure. Ask an English captain, and the details shall be evident.

The above five aspects make Dhoni an institute within himself. There are numerous captains and players, who look up to Dhoni as a source of inspiration. Noting and adapting to the above five factors will surely improve their outlook will rejuvenate their mindset.
