As Pakistan won the One day International series 3-2, there has been good performances from both teams, especially Pakistan who won the three matches in an easy manner while Sri Lanka performed well in patches but they have shown that Sri Lanka has few youngsters who needs time to replace the greats of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
Here we look at 5 things we learned from Pakistan- Sri Lanka One day International series:
1. Lack of Consistency from the Sri Lankan top order
During this One day International series the Sri Lankan top order lacked consistency. The Sri Lankan openers got starts but were not able to convert into big scores. In the first match Dilshan and Kashual score 26 and 38 runs respectively but were dismissed. In the second match, Perera scored a quick fire 68 which helped Sri Lanka chased down a huge target. In the third One day International both were dismissed for 20 and 14. In the fourth One day International Perera was dismissed for 0 and Dilshan scored 50. In the last match Perera and Dilshan scored big runs helping Sri Lanka to post a huge target.
2. All-round performance by Pakistan
The Pakistan team performed well as unit in the One day International series against Sri Lanka. The Pakistan team batted well in the series and bowled well in the series too. Pakistan also fielded exceptionally well in this series and that resulted in Pakistan winning the series. The opening stand for Pakistan was superb that made the work of middle order easier. The youngsters like Rizwan, Anwar Ali contributed to the success of the team. Azhar Ali captaincy was also impressive too.
3. Tough to replace greats like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara
The One day International series against Pakistan was the first without the greats of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. Both of them retired after the World Cup 2015. In this series, the number 3 spot was occupied by Thiramanne who scored 23 in the first match, 4 in the second match, 56 in the third match, 90 in the fourth match and 30 in the last match. The youngsters like Chandimal, Siriwardena, Parithana needs time to settle. The catching and fielding of the Sri Lankan team was not great. Chandimal needs time in keeping. All these youngsters have the potential but needs little bit of guidance.
4. Malinga not at his best
In One day International series against Pakistan, the main bowler of Sri Lanka was not at his best as he did not take many wickets and was not able to control the flow of runs. He looked a little rusty and did not bowl well at all. In the first match of series he bowled 8 overs and conceded 56 runs picking 0 wickets, in the next match he picked 2 wickets and conceded 64 runs. In the third match he picked 1 wicket and gave away 80 runs and in the fourth match where Sri Lanka had not many runs he gave away 46 runs. In the last match he was dropped from the team.
5. Mohammad Hafeez as batsman
Mohammad Hafeez was banned from bowling for 1 year after the first One day International. He was main contributor in the One day International series and was named the man of the series. In the first One day International he scored 103 runs and helped Pakistan to win the match. In the second One day International he was out for 9 and Pakistan lost the match. In the third One day International Hafeez scored a brilliant 54 and helped Pakistan to post a huge total of 316 which Sri Lanka could not chase. In the fourth One day International he scored 70 and helped Pakistan to clinch the series. In the final One day International he scored 37 but could not help Pakistan to chase down a huge target of 369.
