Retractable roofRetractable-roof-in-CricketICC’s rules are not dealing well with the weather variables. D/L System cannot be the only solution. Cricket Needs something new. It is quite frustrating to see matches being interrupted due to rain with D/L system coming into fore unless the match is completely washed out. Many teams on several occasions had to suffer the consequences of an important match being called off, sometimes resulting to their knockout from major tournaments.

The solution of this problem seems possible, although it may, in turn, bring some fresh problems. Retractable roofs can be used to eliminate or reduce the impact of bad weather and rain. Currently, this type of retractable roof can be seen at Wimbledon. The 16m high moving roof at the Wimbledon Centre Court spans an area of 52,000 square metres. The fabric in it is strong, flexible and translucent in order to provide light & an airy feel. Lights installed within the roof come on automatically when the roof is closed.

An airy feel is constantly maintained by an air management procedure which sucks out condensation and creates a close-to-normal environment within 30-40 minutes, with the help of a supplementary oxygen system. The construction of the roof has been estimated to be around 150 million pounds. If this technology can be implemented, it shall be regarded as a huge step in Cricket Technology.
