9 Facts About Malinda Pushpakumara

Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara finally made his international debut in the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club Colombo after ruling domestic circuit for almost a decade. The left-arm spinner has been a stand-out performer for each and every domestic side he has played for his country and has been rated highly.

It is known that spin friendly tracks are laid down in Sri Lankan domestic matches but what makes Pushpakumara special is his consistency to land the ball consistently in the same area. Maybe he doesn’t have the variation like Sri Lanka’s vice captain Rangana Herath but Pushpakumara’s record in the domestic circuit speaks very highly.

Despite breaking into the playing XI the left-arm spinner could hardly make an impact in the opening day’s play as the Indian batsmen made merry and notched up a commendable 344/3 in 90 overs.

1- Pushpakumara was born in Colombo on 24th March 1987.

2- A useful uncanny bowler Pushpaukumara has been the most prolific wicket taker in domestic cricket in Sri Lanka and despite the pitches heavily favouring the spinners, he has dished out some exceptional performances on a consistent basis.

3- Pushpakumara was the leading wicket taker in Premier League tournaments in Sri Lanka during the 2012-13 and the 2014-15 seasons.

4- His most prolific season was 2016-17 where he bagged a record 77 wickets at an astonishing average of 13.79 per wicket with his nearest competitor being 20 wickets away from his tally.

5- His career got overlapped with Rangana Herath’s and hence he was overlooked during his prime as the selectors considered playing only one left-arm spinner.

6- Pushpakumara began his career in Lumbini College, Colombo

7- He was part of Sri Lanka’s U-19 squad in 2005 in a triangular tournament also featuring England and Bangladesh. Later he played for Sri Lanka A and tasted success against South Africa A, New Zealand A and West Indies A.

8- The left-arm spinner has bagged 558 first-class wickets in 99 matches at an astonishing average of 19.85.

9- He also boasts an impressive record in List A matches too with 92 wickets I 53 matches at an exceptional average of 18.59.
