A Change in Coach May Prove to Disturb the Equation: BCCI Official on Ravi Shastri-Virat Kohli Partnership
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited fresh applications. It is for the head coach apart from the support staff. Ravi Shastri’s who shares a great bond with skipper Virat Kohli, saw his tenure completing following the culmination of the ICC World Cup 2019. However, the Board had extended his extension, including coaching staff for 45 days.
Also, the BCCI official while speaking to ANI stated that it could be threatening if one will break Shastri-Kohli combination.
The reports revealed that BCCI official suggests that Shastri should continue as a chief coach in a bid to help Kohli develop as a leader. The duo had backed each other which also yielded India desired results in overseas series.
Under Shastri’s tutelage, India had clinched a historic Test series on Australian soil. They also thrashed Kiwis in the ODI series.
Does Shastri have a backing as a chief coach?
After Anil Kumble stepped down as chief coach, Ravi Shastri had joined the Men in Blue as the head coach after serving Director of Team India in 2015.
During his coaching reign, Kohli-led side had topped the Test charts which also saw them making it to No. 1 in the ODIs. By going the results, Shastri had a good bond with the players too. Also, Shastri is having a good rapport with team management.
The BCCI official stressed that the duo back each other and it would be an injustice for the change of the guard.
He further emphasised that they should be considered for the 2020 T20 World Cup. Also, the official reiterated their partnership could prove fruitful in the 2023 World Cup which is scheduled in India.
“Nothing permanent with a long-term effect should happen at this stage of transition. Shastri and Kohli complement each other well. And it would be unfair to change half of a team that has been successful,” the official added.
The change will lead to a shift in strategy:
While speaking about the equation, the official believes that it could lead to unsettling the things. The BCCI official maintained that if it will be a change, then a whole lot of procedure has to take place which could affect the results of the team.
“A change in coach may prove to disturb the equation that exists which allows the players to have the mental space to excel. If a change is made at this stage, then it would be a change of strategy. Also planning for the next 5 years. It would be unfair to take such a decision at a stage when the stakeholders are not the ones deciding,” the BCCI official concluded.
Meanwhile, Shastri can re-apply for the top-brass post. The board had set the deadline of July 30 for the new applications.
Besides, India will play the bilateral series against Windies. The series will commence from August 3 in Florida.
