A rare collection of Kumar Sangakkara's memorable cover drives
While Sachin Tendulkar pretty much owned the straight drive; it was Rahul Dravid who mastered the square cut, but the cover drive was mastered by none other than Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara, across his illustrious career, has played some delightful strokes, and his cover drives were a sheer treat to the eyes.
Watching Sangakkara go down on one knee to perfect the drive was really inspiring for budding cricketers. It was because of such complete perfection that today Sangakkara is an institute within himself. Considered to have the best technique in the modern day era, Sangakkara is like an ideal role model for any person who wants to perfect the art of batting.
Be it tests, or the ODI’s or even T20 cricket, Sanga’s gracious cover drives have graced almost every occasion. The Sri Lankan batting icon drove the ball with such finesse, that the bowler himself could do nothing but remain stunned and trudge back to his mark accepting the excellence of Sangakkara.
With his retirement just around the corner, cricket will definitely bid adieu to one of its greatest ambassadors. It would just be fair to pay a tribute to the great Sri Lankan. Doing so, in the form of displaying his memorable cover drives would be one thing.
Below, is the compilation of some of his elegant cover drives:
