Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy has never been questioned. He kept the cornerstone in rebuilding the strong Indian side after being surrounded by match-fixing controversies. Ganguly’s style of leadership is compared to the current Indian captain Virat Kohli, who has also led the team to great heights.
The renowned cricket commentator Aakash Chopra built two hypothetical teams led by Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli and compared the two teams.
Sourav Ganguly’s team had the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble. While Virat Kohli also had the current star performers Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Aakash Chopra, who himself included in Sourav Ganguly’s playing XI, said that the former Indian captain had taught the team to win abroad. Under Ganguly, Team India registered Test victory in Pakistan and England.
“We went to Australia and drew the series there. We went to Pakistan and defeated them. In India, we drew one series and lost one series to Australia. And Sourav Ganguly’s team even drew the series in England. It was a fairly good team, a team which taught us how to win abroad,” Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying in Sportskeeda.
On the other hand, Chopra said that the Indian team led by Virat Kohli created history after winning the Test series in Australian soil. However, he also counted the embarrassing defeat of India against South Africa.
“Virat Kohli’s team has defeated Australia in their home conditions, the only team to have done so in Indian cricket history. But they lost in South Africa and lost quite badly in England. In South Africa, they came close but lost the series 2-1,” he added.
Here’s the playing elevens that Aakash Chopra picked to make his comparative analysis.
