AB De Villiers Calls ODI Series Opener “Perfect Preparation” For Champions Trophy

New Zealand and South Africa are two teams that give it their absolute best in order to perform and end on the victorious side. When the two sides clashed in the first ODI of the five match series, fireworks were witnessed as a nail biter flagged off the series. Weather took a toll on the game even before it began as the match was reduced to 34 overs a side affair.

Scratching their way to 207, New Zealand were given some freedom lower down the order when Tim Southee plundered South African pacer Chris Morris for 25 runs off the final over. The Proteas however, driven by a solid start from Quinton De Kock and Hashim Amla seemed on track before the hosts chipped back. However, skipper AB De Villiers and all rounder Andile Phehlukwayo sealed off the chase in the last over calmly.

Post the game, De Villiers admitted that the game’s intensity was an ideal preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy. “Experience-wise it was 10 out of 10 to be put under pressure like that with the bat in hand. Conditions-wise? Zero out of 10. I don’t think we’re going to face any conditions like that in the UK,” De Villiers said.

De Villiers was clear in mentioning that the Proteas weren’t playing for milestones, in a bid to add to their tally of 12 successive ODI wins. “We don’t play for those kind of records but it’s a nice one to have. We are very aware of it. We are only human and will lose one. That’s the nature of the beast,” he said.

So we’ll go to Christchurch, hopefully play a good game and make it another one,” De Villiers added. “That was a great win for us. But there’s lots of games left in the series and we know it’s nowhere near done.”
