Star South African batsman AB de Villiers said that he is “excited” about the prospect of having Otis Gibson as the head coach of the Proteas national team. Gibson came in as the replacement of former coach Russell Domingo whose contract ended after the series against England. Posting a video on his app AB17, he expressed his thoughts on Gibson’s appointment. He also gave special thanks to the outgoing coach Domingo.
De Villiers announced earlier in the month that he will be available for Test selection for South Africa in the upcoming series against New Zealand and England. He also stepped down from the captaincy but will be available for selection as a player. He further added that though he doesn’t know Gibson well he is excited about the future.
“Ottis Gibson, I don’t know him personally well, I’ve obviously seen him quite a few times,” said De Villiers.
“I’ve never had a proper conversation with him. He has played a lot of cricket in his days so he has a great insight into the game and I’m very excited to get to know him better and to start the season off with him as coach.
“I think we’ve got a long road to walk together as a team with him and I’m very positive about the road ahead. Ottis has played the game and will understand the ins and outs of what we need to do to become a better team and so I’m looking forward to starting off with him.”
Gibson who served as the bowling coach of England will start his new role for South Africa after the completion of the three match series on September 11.
His first assignment as a coach will be a two match Test series against Bangladesh starting on September 28.
