The cricketing spectacle is an hour away with hosts England taking on determined South Africa. The world No.1 England are ready to face the Proteas challenge at the Kennington Oval in London in the tournament opener. To some extent, veteran AB de Villiers must be regretting his decision of announcing surprising retirement. However, he is rallying around his team and this time away from the dressing room.

Pertinently, the Three Lions and Proteas have wrestled in 59 ODIs against each other. England went on to seal 26 matches, whereas, Proteas won 25. Meanwhile, the clash of heavyweights will also reveal how marquee players will shape up for the 45-odd day tourney.

The celebrated cricketer de Villiers has been a quintessential figure in world cricket.

The 35-year-old de Villiers has often inspired many with his work ethic. Furthermore, his whirlwind knock has baffled the opponents.

Known for his classic stroke-making, de Villiers has bid adieu to the gentleman’s game in 2018.

Since 2004, de Villiers went on to feature in 228 ODIs, 114 Tests and 79 T20Is for South Africa.

However, the stalwart took to his Twitter handle to extend support to Faf du Plessis-led Proteas.

With South Africa yet to lay hands on the coveted trophy, they’re brimming with confidence despite losing the services of their integral figure, de Villiers.

Earlier, de Villiers himself wished to make a return in 2023 World Cup based on a condition. He maintained if MS Dhoni will be around, then he could think of returning to the ground.

“Thinking of my Protea friends today! Big day. I believe the boys are ready. Let’s get behind our team #ProteaFire @OfficialCSA @cricketworldcup,”
