With the slow and low pitches of the Caribbean in context, for Australia to do well, the initiative from the bowling front will rely on the shoulders of Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa. Lyon has been Australia’s most successful off spinner in test matches, but somehow hasn’t been able to replicate the same success in the shorter formats. However, for the tri series in West Indies, Lyon should find great assistance from the wickets.
Lyon though, will be supported by world cricket’s latest spin sensation, Adam Zampa. Zampa made heads turn around when the leg spinner grabbed a six wicket haul in the IPL recently while representing the Rising Pune Supergiants. Zampa being a typical wrist spinner, can be lethal in the Caribbean, and can give Australia a massive advantage.
At the pre match press conference, Lyon said that Zampa was quite talented, and was on the pathof becoming a great spinner. “It’s exciting to see him come through,” Lyon said. “He’s developing into a great spinner. “He’s backed himself. He understands where his game is at. He trusts his spinning ability and he’s come along in leaps and bounds.”
“We’re really good mates … I’ve known him for a few years now,” Lyon further added about the leg spinner. “Hopefully if we get the chance to play out there in the middle together, we can win a couple of games for Australia.”
Zampa was also backed by skipper Steve Smith, who praised the leggie. “He’s certainly come a long way over the last couple of years,” skipper Smith said. “He knows what he wants to do and reads the batsmen very well. His control has improved a lot as well. “Hopefully we see him continue to progress.”
