Mumbai born batsman Shreyas Iyer finally made it to the grandest stage of all. The right-handed batsman earned his maiden One Day international call-up as the selectors revealed the Indian team for their upcoming battle against Sri-Lanka. The 22-year-old has some monumental responsibility on his shoulders as he was roped in to replace none other than Virat Kohli.
The Indian skipper has been rested for the series following a hectic schedule which paved the opportunity for the youngster. However, the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer brought smiles on the faces of his domestic teammates. Mumbai coach and former Indian international Sameer Dighe believe that Iyer deserved this chance completely. The wicket-keeper also highlighted the fact that Iyer’s mental strength will be a major boost for the batsman himself and also the team.
“Shreyas is a key player in the Indian Premier League and is capable of getting runs everywhere. He looks very mature now too. His mental strength will help handle the high pressure of international cricket,” quoted Sameer Dighe.
“I’m very pleased for Shreyas. He is getting the opportunity to play for the country because he has scored runs consistently. He is a brilliant fielder and good timer of the ball — a fabulous all-round cricketer. It’s a big opportunity and he is more than capable of handling it well,” he added.
Mumbai teammate and captain of the team Aditya Tare also expressed his happiness for Shreyas. Iyer has tasted immense success under the captaincy of Aditya Tare in the domestic circuit. Tare has a habit of pushing and supporting his mates and Shreyas Iyer is no exception. Speaking about Iyer’s inclusion in the senior national side tare had a broad smile on his face.
“I am very happy for Shreyas because he’s getting into the Indian team. He deserves it,” quoted Adtiya Tare.”
