Agonsingly Close: When teams fell short by one run in IPL

Despite Chris Morris’ heroics, Delhi Daredevils fell short by one run against Gujarat Lions in an Indian Premier League match at the Feroze Shah Kotla on Wednesday night.

This, however, is not the first time that a team has won by such narrow margin in the IPL. Since 2008, there have been six instances- including this match —of teams winning by one run.

Sportzwiki looks back at the other five matches when the teams fell short by just one run while chasing in the Indian Premier League over the years.

1.Mumbai Indians vs. Kings XI Punjab, 2008
KXIP: 189/4
Mumbai Indians: 188/10

The 45th match of the inaugural season of IPL saw KXIP defeat MI by a solitary run. Riding on the 134-run partnership between Aussie pair of Shaun Marsh and Luke Pomersbach KXIP posted a huge total of 189 runs. Marsh scored 81 off 56 balls, clobbering seven fours and four sixes while Pomersbach remained unbeaten on 79 off 50 deliveries hammering 10 fours and three sixes.

Chasing 190, Mumbai got off to a flier courtesy Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya who put up 36 runs in just 2.4 overs. Mumbai were well on course to chase the target but Sachin’s dismissal on the last ball of the 17th over triggered a collapse as Mumbai

lost four wickets in just 11 runs which left them to score 19 in the last over for victory. And despite Siddharth Chitnis’ cameo (15 off six balls), Mumbai Indians was not able to cross the line, finishing at 188.

2.Deccan Chargers vs. Kings XI Punjab, 2009
KXIP: 134/7;

KXIP was once again involved in a nail-biting finish. This was the year when the IPL was shifted to South Africa due to the general elections in India. At the Wanderers in Johannesburg, Kings XI scored 134 for seven, thanks to Kumar Sangakkara’s half-century. Chasing a low total Adam Gilchrist gave Deccan a brisk start as he took them to 30 in three overs.
Ramesh Powar changed the game with his double strike on successive deliveries to dismiss Gilchrist and Tirumalasetti Suman. A useful partnership between Andrew Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs threatened to take the match away from KXIP but Yuvraj Singh struck to remove the South African on the last delivery of the 12th over. He returned in the 14th to take two more in the first two balls to complete his second hat-trick of the tournament. Deccan were reeling at 79/5 in 13.2 overs. In the end, a quickfire innings of 42 from just 26 balls from Rohit Sharma was not enough to take the Chargers home as they fell short by one run.

Umesh Yadav, who bowled the last over, was smashed for a maximum by Ajinkya Rahane on the fourth ball. He took a double in the second last which left two to get off the final one. Rahane missed the last but ran and Owais Shah could not make it as wicket-keeper Naman Ojha hit the stumps to run him out.

MI decided to bat first after winning the toss but PWI captain Sourav Ganguly used his bowlers wisely to restrict Mumbai Indians to a paltry total of 120.But then Pune got the taste of their own medicine as they were reduced to 47/4 in 9.5 overs. What made the situation worse for Warriors was skipper’s Sourav Ganguly knock of 16 runs from 24 balls. When Ganguly came on to the bat, the asking rate was just over six and by the time he got out, Warriors required 27 off the 18 balls. They scored 15 runs in the next two which left them 12 to win in the final. With eight needed in the last two, Bhuvneshwar Kumar hit a four followed by a double as Warriors fell short by one run.

The second match of the last season saw a nail-biting finish. Batting first CSK posted a respectable total of 150.The target was chase-able but Delhi batsmen made a mess of it. Albie Morkel fought a lone battle till the end as he was running out of partners with wickets falling at regular intervals. Needing 19 off the last over, Morkel smacked Dwayne Bravo for four on the first ball followed by a single. The South African then hit the West Indian for six in the fourth. Morkel took a double on the fifth ball  followed by a boundary in the final but his heroics were not enough to take Daredevils home as they lost the match by one run.
