Ajinkya Rahane In Doubt For Limited-Overs Series Against England 1

Ajinkya Rahane might miss the upcoming ODI and T20I series against England after suffering a finger injury that has also ruled him out of the ongoing Test series against the same opposition.

The BCCI had said the Mumbai batsman suffered “an avulsion fracture on his right index finger” after getting hit by a ball during a practice session on the eve of the fourth Test. With still over a month left before the limited-overs series begins, it was expected that the right-handed batsman would recover in time to play. However, Cricbuzz has reported Rahane has been told that his finger would take at least a month to heal completely which has effectively ruled him out of the series that begins on January 15.

The injury is a huge blow to the Indian team who are also set to miss Rohit Sharma in the ODI and T20 series. The opener underwent a surgery in London on his right upper quadriceps tendon last month after hurting himself during the final match of the ODI series against New Zealand. All-rounder Hardik Pandya is also in doubt for the series.

Not only for the team but the injury will also be a big setback for Rahane who is still trying to cement his place in the ODI team. In Shikhar Dhawan’s absence, he was asked to accompany Rohit Sharma at the top against New Zealand but he failed to grab the opportunity as he could score only 143 runs in five matches. In Rahane and Rohit Sharma’s absence, Dhawan and KL Rahul are likely to open the innings and if they perform well, Rahane might find it tough to make it to the playing eleven in the Champions Trophy, which is the next 50-overs tournament that India will play after the series against England.
