Ajinkya Rahane Opens up on His Role As Virat Kohli’s Test Deputy

India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has expressed that what responsibilities come with you when you are a deputy of the captain. According to him, the deputy should be ready, to handle every situation and apart from setting a focus on plan B when the skipper asks.
Rahane’s position was once questioned in the playing XI but the star batter kept improving himself to bag the position of vice-captain in the team. He had also led India to a famous series-clinching victory in the 4th Test of the home series vs Australia in 2016-17.
Captain should be calm: Ajinkya Rahane
While talking to India Today, the 31-year-old shared his experience of captaining a team. He said that its important to be calm and composed and don’t take too much pressure as a leader. Adding, the leader backs his instincts on the field.
“As a vice-captain, it is important that first you take a back seat and whenever the captain comes for a suggestion you should be ready to give that suggestion. If the captain has Plan A you should have Plans B and C ready with you.”
“As captain, I think everyone has a different style of captaincy. For me, it’s all about keeping myself calm and cool. As captain, you sometimes tend to become (agitated) but you have to keep yourself really calm and back your instincts. I believe captaincy is all about backing your instincts,” replied Rahane.
Ajinkya Rahane’s struggling form against New Zealand:
Currently, Rahane is busy playing the two-match Test series against New Zealand. The Mumbai-based player has struggled to deliver against the New Zealand pacers. In the first Test, he scored 75 runs which India went on to lose by 10 wickets.
Similarly, in the ongoing second Test match, he was dismissed for 7 and 9 in first and second innings respectively.
Meanwhile, India needs to win the second Test match against Kiwis, to strengthen their position at the top of the ICC World Test Championship 2019-21 points table.
