Ajit Agarkar Reckons Shubman Gill Should Have Got The Opportunity Couple Of Years Back

Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar heaped praise on Shubman Gill’s batting prowess even though he has only faced 38 balls in the first innings of India against Australia in the second Test. The youngster has been replaced with Prithvi Shaw, who struggled with the bat in the first Test.

After the early loss of Mayank Agarwal without adding a run on the scoreboard, the debutant Shubman Gill might have been under pressure to build the innings with the veteran Cheteshwar Pujara. But Gill never lost his calm albeit Australia dropped one chance when he edged the ball but Labuschagne could not hold the ball.

The 21-year-old went on to play some impressive strokes to win the heart of former cricketer Ajit Agarkar. Although Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon was bowling perfect areas, Gill got better off them. He hit them for straight drives and cover drives which was enough to announce that Gill will go far in international cricket.

Seeing his techniques, Ajit Agarkar stated that the Punjab cricketer should have been given chance much earlier. He reckons that the young gun is already ready to play international cricket.

He should have got an opportunity couple of years back. He just looks ready. You can see obviously he has got the potential,” Ajit Agarkar told Sony Sports.

Agarkar, who was also commentating during the match, stated that although Gill was for little period on day one, his innings would have boosted his confidence.

“Couldn’t have been easy this little period but just grew in confidence with every ball that he played. Yes, got an opportunity, he has got that little bit of luck which you need at times. Hopefully, he can go on and make that count,” Ajit Agarkar added.

Earlier, R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah stepped up as India recovered well from the Adelaide horror to bowl Australia out for 195 on Day 1 at MCG. Another debutant Mohammed Siraj made a fine first impression with wickets of Marnus Labuschagne (48) and Cameron Green (12).
