Alastair Cook signs off with a high in latest Test rankings

33-year-old Alastair Cook had a fitting farewell at The Oval. He scored a hundred in his final Test match, earned the man of the match award and now moves up to 10 in the latest MRF ICC Test Rankings. His 71 and 147 not only put an end to the run-drought but also helped England secure a 4-1 series win.

Cook’s scores were 13, 0, 21, 29, 17, 17 and 12 in the first four Tests. He announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the fourth Test. He finished his illustrious career with 12,472 runs in 161 Tests. In the process, he also became the fifth most prolific run-scorer in Test cricket.

Only Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid are ahead of him in the list. England skipper Joe Root finally scored a ton after a span of one year. He did score 11 fifties in that phase but a hundred eluded him. Root gained one spot and now finds himself at no.4. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, scored close to 600 runs in the series but ended the campaign with a golden duck. He has retained the top spot while his teammate KL Rahul jumped 16 places to reach the no 19 spot.

Rishabh Pant, who featured for the first time in Tests, scored a hundred in the fifth Test and moved 63 places. He is currently at the no. 111 spot with 285 points. Moving on to the bowling front- James Anderson is still at the top. He bagged a five-for when it mattered the most and ended the series with 24 wickets.

The 36-year-old went past Glenn McGrath’s 563 Test wickets and is currently the most successful pacer in test cricket. He is having 899 points at the moment and needs just four more to match his all time highest rating. At the second spot is South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada.
