Former South Africa opener Alviro Petersen has been handed a two-year ban by Cricket South Africa after he admitted to several breaches of the anti-corruption code in relation to the match-fixing scandal that broke out in 2015-16 Ram Slam T20 Challenge.
The 36-year-old admitted failing to disclose details of an approach to fix matches, not co-operating with investigators by not providing accurate and complete information, and concealing and destroying information relevant to the investigation.
However, the cricket board has accepted the former opener had not tried to fix a match.
“Alviro has realised his mistakes and has acknowledged contravening the code. He is obliged under the code to have disclosed various approaches that were made to him to engage in corrupt activities,” said Haroon Lorgat, the CSA chief executive.
Petersen is the sixth player to receive a ban for being involved in the match-fixing scandal that rocked the South Africa cricket last year. The other five players are Gulam Bodi (20-year ban), Thami Tsolekile (12 years), Pumelela Matshikwe (10 years), Ethy Mbhalati (10 years) and Jean Symes (7 years).
Pleading innocence, Petersen in a statement said:“At the time that the meetings with (Gulam) Bodi and the fixers happened, I never had any intention of fixing matches or taking money.I now deeply regret having participated in these meetings and not to have immediately reported them to the authorities as I am obliged to do.”
As a result of the ban, Petersen, who played 36 tests for the Proteas, is now barred from playing in any international or domestic game that is sanctioned by the CSA or the International Cricket Council (ICC) until November 12, 2018.
