I Always Wanted To Be A Player Who Would Lead The Side By Winning Matches: Kedar Jadhav

For the second game in a row, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batting stalwarts- Chris Gayle and Shane Watson- failed to get going with the bat. The onus was on Kedar Jadhav to guide the team to a respectable total against Delhi Daredevils. The enormity of the task nevertheless was not a mean one. With very little support from the other end, the India batsman had to mix caution with aggression to take his team to a good total and he did it with utmost aplomb. The 32-year old blasted 69 off 37 deliveries including 5 fours and 5 well-timed sixes as the last year’s runners-up posted 157 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. The total turned out to be more than enough in the end as Delhi Daredevils could manage only 142 for 9, handing RCB their first win of the season.

Jadhav has hit a purple patch in the last few months. The Maharashtra skipper has been one of the most consistent performers in the domestic circuits in the last few years and he is finally reaping the rewards for it. He had already proved his worth as a hard-hitting batsman during the ODI series against England earlier this year and he is now looking to make the most of his form in this year’s IPL.

Speaking after the match, he spoke on various topics ranging from his unconventional batting style, how fitness transformed his game and much more.

Excerpts:

On playing unorthodox shots:

“I started playing first-class cricket. I have been trying all the shots because I feel you have to try and get to the excellence part. I never wanted to be a player who will just get into the team. I always wanted to be a player who will lead the side by winning matches. So that is how I trained my mind.”

On batting up the order:

“I face more balls when I bat higher and as a batsman, you always try to get as many balls as you can so that you can score more runs. I am in a phase where I am hitting the ball well. Experience part is also there. I have been playing first-class cricket for last 10 years. I can get the best out of me as long as I am facing more balls. It was team management’s decision to send me higher and I need to support them with a performance like this. “

On working on his fitness and game:

” Last year I didn’t play too many games. That gave me a good time to work on my fitness and fielding because batting was always there but these two things were not up to the mark as a professional cricketer. So that last year’s IPL where I played only 4 games, I got enough time to train with our trainer Shankar Basu. It has definitely transformed my game. I am feeling much stronger, fitter.”

On regaining fitness:

“I lost 7 kgs so I am able to move faster. You can too much confidence when you feel that you are fit. Obviously, you just don’t need to feel but you have to work on your fitness. So, I guess that part has worked for me.”

On the target:

“We felt that we were 15-20 runs short but when we came out to field Watson said we have to make it up for it through the fielding. And definitely the way Watson rotated the bowlers and especially himself. Last game was not good for him as a bowler but he came back very strongly and led from the front. The way out bowlers bowled today, I get too much confidence that if we can defend a 160 total, big things are ahead.”
