Andre Fletcher calls arrest over carrying live ammunition a ‘misunderstanding’ on his part 1

The West Indian team is not new to controversy as there were many incidents where the players, due to lack of discipline or for any other reason, were fined or arrested. One such incident in the recent times in West Indies cricket is that of Darren Fletcher.

The 27 year old was arrested and fined over carrying live ammunition. But in a statement to a website, Fletcher said that he did not know of the live ammunition and that he was under the impression that they were pellets for his air rifle. Fletcher defended himself that he obtained a completely sealed package. He said that he was told that they were air rifle pellets and that he only got to know about the live ammo at the Airport after being caught.

He went on to say that he had no intention of hiding the package as he did not think of it as illegal. He said that he bought the package into the Airport holding it in his hand and loosely placed in on his luggage without too much care. He said that he had no idea that he would be stopped by the security at the Doulas Charles Airport in Dominica.

At the airport after a thorough check, the custom authorities informed Fletcher that he was carrying what looked like live .22 calibre rounds and not .22 pellets. Further investigation was made and it was confirmed that he was indeed carrying live ammo through the airport.

The wicket keeper batsmen who termed that incident as unfortunate said that he will still try his best to get back into the national team even after the incident by trying to be consistent in the domestic arena. Fletcher was detained on May 28th this year and on its eve, Fletcher said that he would never intentionally do something to hurt or cause embarrassment to his family, his friends or his nation.
