We can never forget the days when the great players like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble played together in the Indian team. One of them would stand as the back of the team and lead the team to victory. Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman had a privilege to play with these cricketers. In the show Very Very Special stories, Laxman labelled his teammate Anil Kumble as the match-winner.
Anil Kumble was one of the best spinners that team India has produced. The former Indian captain is the leading wicket-taker for India in Test cricket with 619 Test wickets. VVS Laxman revised an old memory, as he labelled it a bad memory, where the former spinner bowled him in the domestic cricket.
“My dear friend Anil Kumble is probably India’s biggest match-winner… The biggest match-winner I played with,” said VVS Laxman.
“It was a bad memory. I did well for Hyderabad, and India U 19 so was picked for the India B side in the Challengers Trophy. The match was happening in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium. I can never forget the sound of the ball hitting my pad… Against a leggie, you go on the backfoot trying to hit it square of the wicket… I did that in the previous ball but the next ball struck my pads even before my bat came down, Anil was quick in the air,” said Laxman.
I knew you were a backfoot player – Anil Kumble to VVS Laxman
In 1990, Anil Kumble played the first Test match for Indian team against England. He played 132 Test matches and his last Test match was in 2008. Kumble also refreshed the old memory and reminded VVS Laxman about the advice which the spinner gave to him.
“I had heard about you. I knew you were a backfoot player. Probably that’s how I used to set up a player. I just got lucky that day and I also remember coming to you after that match telling you not to play on the backfoot,” Kumble said.
VVS Laxman played 134 Test matches, 84 of those with Anil Kumble. Laxman was the part of the team when Kumble was handed over the captaincy.
