After enjoying a stellar home season that culminated with a riveting come-from-behind 2-1 series win over Australia, India head coach Anil Kumble has congratulated Team India for the ‘stellar performances’.
The world number one team began the Border-Gavaskar series in the worst possible manner, losing the series-opener in Pune by a massive 333-runs. But Virat Kohli’s men bounced back in style in the next Test in Bengaluru as they levelled the four-match series 1-1 with a comprehensive 75-run victory. The penultimate Test ended in a draw when Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell played out of their skin on a fifth-day pitch to salvage a draw.
Then came the final Test in Dharamsala. Both the teams had fought fiercely in the series and with so much at stake, another cracker of a match was on the cards. However, even before the match had begun, the hosts suffered a huge setback as their maverick skipper Virat Kohli was ruled out of the contest due to injury. But India led by Ajinkya Rahane defied all the odds and thrashed Australia by 8 wickets inside four days to wrap up the series 2-1.
Meanwhile, the win not only helped Team India reclaim the Border-Gavaskar series but also helped them to retain the ICC Test Championship mace in addition to winning a cash award of USD one million.
Now that the home season has ended on such a brilliant note, Kumble will be very pleased with his journey with the Indian team so far. The former India bowler began his tenure during the West Indies tour in July last year. Since then Virat Kohli’s men have registered series wins over West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and most recently Australia.
Congratulating the team after the win in Dharamsala, Kumble tweeted:“The team did a wonderful job with stellar performances. Congratulations on the series win & becoming no.1 in tests!”
