Is the untenable relation between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble the only reason for the exit of Anil Kumble from the post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team? Seems no.
In one of the points in the presentation which Kumble had submitted before his exit shows that he wanted BCCI to keep him and all the coaches out of contract for the two months, which can allow them to be part of IPL teams as well, “The Players are kept out of the contracts during two months IPL window. Similarly, the Coaches too need to be kept put of the contract allowing them to be a part of the IPL – this will enable them to augment their earnings and gain more experience particularly for the T20 games.” a point in Kumble’s presentation stated under the heading of Guidelines for Enablers.
There is nothing mentioned in rule books whether issuing a 10 months contract is a conflict of interest or not but Ramachandra Guha, former member of COA, in his letter to Vinod Rai had termed this practice a wrong one, where a coach was given a contract of 10 months, which allowed him to be part of an IPL team – bypassing the rules. Guha though didn’t mention the name of Rahul Dravid but Dravid is the biggest name who coaches BCCI teams and had an IPL contract as well.
Dravid though was quick to ask BCCI for conflict of interest, to clear himself of any sort of issue. Later, BCCI clarified that and from then, none of the BCCI coaches were allowed to involved with an IPL team. Though the decision came much later and till then, Kumble had already submitted his presentation to the board.
It has come to notice that in his presentation to BCCI, Kumble’s main stress was on pay as along with it, he also asked for a change in the pay structure of coach and as per his recommendation, a coach should receive 60% of what skipper gets as fees. These all did not go well wth BCCI as well and in the end, Kumble resigned, which can also be one of the reasons why the board might be not impressed with Kumble and hence, they invited applications and Kumble resigned just after the conclusion of one year as the Head Coach of Indian cricket team.
