England have suffered a blow ahead of the T20I series against New Zealand as their all-rounder Joe Denly has been ruled out of the opening game of the series due to an ankle issue. Denly, who was set to play the opening game, suffered the injury while taking a catch at the boundary ropes during the practice session.

He was in visible discomfort after he fell down and later, it was confirmed that the all-rounder will is not part of the opening game. England will assess his condition over the next 48 hours before taking a call on him.

Denly is also a part of the Test side and it is unlikely that the visitors will risk him in the T20I series if he is not fully fit.

England have already confirmed that Sam Curran and Pat Brown will make their T20I debuts in the opening game. Curran, a regular in the Test team, has played just two ODIs so far for England. Though he was one of the most sought-after players in IPL 2019 as Kings XI Punjab shelled Rs 7.20 Crore for the all-rounder.

Dropped from the Test team, Jonny Bairstow will have a new partner at the other end. England are without the services of Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes for the T20I series as they named six uncapped players for the T20Is.

The T20I series kicks off tomorrow with the first game in Christchurch. The next four T20Is will be played on November 3, 5, 8 and 10. Following the T20Is, the two teams will play two-match Test series starting November 21.

Meanwhile, England have roped in former England pacer Darren Gough as their bowling coach for the two-Test matches. He has had attended team’s sessions in past but has taken over the coaching role in the official capacity for the first time. Earlier, the visitors had roped in Jeetan Patel as their spin-bowling consultant for the five T20Is.
