After Arjun Ranatunga's Fixing Allegations, Sri Lanka Sports Minister Willing To Investigate 2011 World Cup Final 1

Following Arjuna Ranatunga’s sensational allegations regarding the final of the 2011 World Cup, Sri Lanka Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera, on Wednesday (July 19), stated he is willing to order an investigation into his country’s six-wicket loss against India.

“Let anyone make a written complaint I am ready to order an investigation,” Jayasekera told reporters.

Earlier this month, Ranatunga had raised questions on Sri Lanka’s performance. The World Cup-winning skipper, who was at the Wankhede on a fateful night, posted a video on Facebook, demanding an investigation.

“I was also in India giving commentaries at the time. When we lost, I was distressed and I had a doubt,” Ranatunga had said. “We must investigate what happened to Sri Lanka at the 2011 World Cup final. I cannot reveal everything now, but one day I will. There must be an inquiry.”

Both India and Sri Lanka had entered the final on the back of some brilliant performances but the Men in Blue outclassed the Mahela Jayawardene-led side by six wickets to win their second World Cup. Chasing a challenging 275, India were reeling at 31 for 2 with both Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag back in the hut. However, the home side, led by Gautam Gambhir’s 97 and captain MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 91, turned the game remarkably before Dhoni sealed the game with a six at long on.

The fixing allegations, nevertheless, have been garnering momentum in recent times with former Sri Lanka Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage also raising concerns.

The politician, who was also present at the match, recently told a local TV that the managers report had claimed that a senior Sri Lankan player had smoked as many as over 50 cigarettes in the dressing room during the game and the then captain offered to resign immediately after the game without any reason to do so.

“Then there are also questions about the behaviour of a very senior player. During the match, instructions sent to the field were ignored,” Aluthgamage said without revealing the name of the player.
