Arjun Tendulkar along with 19 other allrounders have been called up to the National Cricket Academy by the BCCI as part of Indian cricket board’s plan to identify young multi-skilled cricketers. The players will undergo a rigorous three-week camp at the NCA in Bengaluru.
The camp will get underway in August. Arjun, son of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, plies his trade for Goa in first-class cricket and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While he started his domestic career with Mumbai, he decided to switch states last season after failing to get regular playing chances for the domestic giants. In the IPL, he finally made his debut in this year’s edition and impressed one and all with his left-arm bowling.
“There is an Emerging Asia Cup (U-23) also later this year and the BCCI is looking at potential youngsters. The all-rounders camp is an idea of NCA’s head of cricket VVS Laxman to ensure that we develop a lot of multi-skilled players across formats,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.
“Not everyone summoned for camp is a pure all-rounder. Some are batting all-rounders and some are opposite. The idea is to tap the potential and help them upgrade their skills suitably for transition to next grade,” the source added.
Arjun Tendulkar shortlisted for NCA camp:
Apart from Arjun Tendulkar, the likes of Chetan Sakariya and Abhishek Sharma have been selected for the camp too. Both Sakariya and Sharma made a name for themselves after impressing in the IPL. Apart from the trio, talented players like Mohit Redkar, Manav Suthar, Harshit Rana and Divij Mehra have been picked too.
Talking about Arjun Tendulkar, he played three games in IPL 2023 and did not look under pressure at all as he impressed with his bowling at the big stage. Talking about his selection, the BCCI source said: “Arjun already has a Ranji Trophy century. A left-arm pacer who bowls between early and mid 130 kmph and bats left-handed. He brings in variety.”
“It is not just about numbers but also about potential. He is 23 and has time to develop is what this (senior selection) committee thinks. Else, they wouldn’t have picked him. Yes, he only has 12 wickets from seven first-class games but he has shown a certain degree of ability and coaches will work on that,” the BCCI source added.
