Arjuna Ranatuga Wants To Ban Player Agents If Given Authority

Sri Lankan World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has expressed his desire to ban the cricketer’s agent of the national team if he gets the power to do so.

“I will wait and watch and I might even go to courts against agents,” Ranatunga said.

He was of the opinion that Sri Lanka’s lacklustre performance in the recent bilateral series against Zimbabwe was due to the involvement of the agent and losing to a lop sided Zimbabwe side will remain one of the lowest points in Sri Lankan cricket history.

The former captain took the name of a British national who is known to manage most of the top Sri Lankan cricketers. Sri Lanka’s 3-2 series defeat has caused an uproar in the island nation and the cricketing pundits and fanatics have blamed the agents for not handling the cricketers well.

“There needs to be an investigation if they (the agent) pays taxes and how they take the money out of the country,” said Ranatunga.

Sri Lanka were the overwhelming favourites ahead of the 5 match series and no one in their distant dreams would have thought the lowly ranked Zimbabwe side to brush aside such a competitive side like Sri Lanka. Despite some of the big names retiring in the recent years, they had enough resources in their kitty to defeat the African minnows but it was not to be as Zimbabwe defeated Sri Lanka for the first time in a series by a 3-2 margin.

Zimbabwe chased down a mammoth target with utmost ease in the opening ODI but Sri Lanka made a strong comeback in the next two encounters by taking a 2-1 lead in the series. It looked done and dusted for Zimbabwe but the script was yet to be written. Zimbabwe was not yet ready to surrender the series and courtesy valiant all-round performance by the team, the minnows managed to edge past Sri Lanka in the final 2 ODI’s to clinch the series 3-2.

Following the resignation of Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga and Dinesh Chandimal has been elected as the limited overs captain and Test captain respectively. They are currently fighting it out in the one off Test against Zimbabwe and would look to restore some pride by winning this one.
