Arun Kartik Roped In By Kerala Cricket Association As The Second Guest Player
The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has been on a search for a second guest player, a senior domestic cricketer, who could have played a dual role in the side full of youngsters. The state association was particularly seeking an opener who could also act as a mentor to the young brigade.
However, their attempts to rope in a suitable name failed in the last two months. The negotiations to play for KCA in the upcoming domestic season seemed to be going nowhere.
Punjab Opener Jiwanjot Singh, the favourite, turns down the offer
Earlier, the KCA received requests from close to 5-6 players but the board had not made any firm decision.
Paras Dogra (Himachal Pradesh), Ganesh Satish (Rajasthan) and India ‘A’ opener Tanmay Srivastava were some of the names that were shortlisted. But, the final decision was yet to be made.
Former India internationals Irfan Pathan and Wasim Jaffer also approached the KCA but the board was hesitant to agree as they were not long term options.
They had their eyes firmly set on Punjab star Jiwanjot Singh who was considered as the favourite. However, Jiwanjot showed reluctance and turned down the offer to dash all hopes.
KCA finally relented on TN batsman Arun Kartik
KCA finally settled on former Tamil Nadu batsman Arun Karthik as their second guest player. The decision was taken in a meeting that included KCA secretary Jayesh George, Dav Whatmore (Kerala coach), Tinu Yohannan (Director, Centre of Excellence and bowling coach) and S Ramesh (Director, Games Development) in Chennai on Friday (July 7).
Karthik will play along with Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Jalaj Saxena who was roped in by the KCA last year.
“Arun Karthik has agreed to play for us next season. We have received positive feedbacks from him. He was keen to play for us and we feel his presence will be beneficial to Kerala cricket,” said Jayesh George.
The deal is likely to be formalised next week as Karthik will have to get an NOC from Assam Cricket Association, for whom he played last year and he is expected to receive in a day or two.
