Ashes 2017/18: “We showed a lot of character”- Joe Root
Australia takes a 2-0 lead in the Ashes series after beating England by 120 runs in the day-night Test as the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. England came into the fifth day with high hopes, but all those dreams faded away with the dismissal of Joe Root and Moeen Ali early in the day. The tourists lost their last six wickets in the first session of the fifth day.
England needed 178 runs to win with six wickets in hand on the last day but could only manage 58 runs in the session. Josh Hazelwood removed nightwatchman Chris Woakes and England skipper Joe Root on 67. Moeen Ali was also removed soon by Nathan Lyon with just Jonny Bairstow the only recognized batsman at the crease.
Mitchell Starc took the last wicket of Bairstow to finish the match. Starc finished with another five-wicket haul and finished with the figures of 5-88. Hazelwood and Lyon picked up two wickets each while Cummins picked up the wicket Dawid Malan.
Shaun Marsh was adjudged the man of the match for his 126* in the first innings. The third Test will be played at the WACA in Perth from 14th December.
In the post match presentation Joe Root said-:
“We had high hopes. The way we went about yesterday has to be the benchmark for the rest of the series. We showed a lot of character. The way our senior players stood up and bowled them out for what we did, and then go on with the bat, was excellent. Today is disappointing. We are massively in the series. We showed that in the way we played yesterday. You can say that now (on his decision to bowl first). If you look at the conditions and the way the ball moved around, we were massively in the game. We couldn’t take the wickets early. Credit to Shaun Marsh, who played really well. The support we have had over the last few days has been outstanding. Barmy Army and everyone’s who followed us – as a team, we can’t thank them enough.”
