Ashes 2017/18: Ben Stokes Footage Evoked “Horrible Memories” for Darren Lehmann
The recent Ben Stokes controversy has shaken the cricket fraternity and the fans all around, and with the upcoming Ashes, this Ben Stokes Saga has been in the headlines.
The footage of the brawl in Bristol came out in the public which showed Stokes delivering punches to two men. The footage went viral all over the world. Darren Lehman who is the coach of the Australian cricket team had an immediate effect after watching the video.
The video evoked the memories of a night 13 years ago when Lehmann was with David Hookes, an Australian cricketer and coach of Victoria cricket team who was punched by a bouncer outside a pub and died. Lehmann said the video had brought back the “horrific memories” of the night happened a few years ago.
However the brawl in Bristol ended only with some facial injuries and a visit to the hospital, Lehmann believes that everyone should be careful what they do outside. He said,
“It’s happening all around the world, to be fair. Not just one incident, [We’ve] got to be careful with what we do outside, anywhere. It’s a touchy one for me. I can’t say much. Obviously, it’s with the ECB, and I don’t know the whole story, no one does I don’t think. Really, it’s left with them and [we’ll] see what they do, but we can’t control what they do with Ben or any of their players.”
On asked to present his view on the incident he said he is not yet in a state to provide his opinions on it,
“What we’ve got to worry about is getting our best XI to play really good cricket. At the end of the day, I have my personal views, but at the moment, until I get the whole story, I’m not going to share them.”
He also said it is up to the 25 million people on how they receive Stokes if he is in the squad to travel Down Under,
“You’d have to ask the 25 million people in Australia. Me as the coach, I’ll probably stay away from that one as well. I think it will be interesting. We’ll only know if he comes and if he plays.”
