Ashes 2017/18: Joe Root Not Too Worried About Taking on Australia
Not many would have expected West Indies to have stretched out England till the very end. The three match series might reflect a 2-1 series triumph for England, but in reality, it was a toughly fought affair with individual displays highlighting both teams.
James Anderson in particular, stood out with his sheer brilliance in the last Test, registering his career best figures. For England though, the actual challenge remains now, as just days remain before the touring party announce their squad. Recently appointed skipper Joe Root did manage to score successive series triumphs, but things will be extremely different in Australia.
However, post the victory at Lord’s in the third Test of the series, Root was confident about taking on Australia, Down Under. The England captain mentioned that he wasn’t too concerned about taking on Australia.
“We’ve played some really good stuff this summer,” Root said. “We had two difficult weeks but what’s most pleasing is the resilience and character we’ve shown to come back from both of those defeats with extremely strong performances.”
“I think those learnings and the manner in which we won after that is great ahead of what is going to be a very challenging winter. And along with that comes great opportunity, so if we can continue to have the same approach, keep wanting to get better, keep learning then we’ll be in a good place,” he added.
“We shouldn’t be afraid of going over there to Australia and, if we perform at our best, doing something really special. “We’ve got all the attributes to go down there and put in some really strong performances and get results. But I think it’s making sure we put the hard work in now and start preparing, so when we get to Australia, we’re already one step ahead,” Root said, about the Ashes, later this year.
